‘The Hummingbird Project’ aims to promote happiness and well-being

Students from Years 7 to 10 have recently been learning more about mental health thanks to ‘MedEquip4Kids’ latest project.

The Hummingbird Project was launched with the aim of improving mental health in young people. The project was devised by MedEquip4Kids and is currently being delivered in schools throughout Greater Manchester and Cheshire.

The project is led by trained staff and volunteers who present a six week course, centering on Positive Psychology and aims to give young people the techniques and tools to become more emotionally resilient. Topics include Mental Health and Stigma, Happiness and Well being, Resilience and Character Strengths, Growth Mindsets, Hope and Gratitude, and Mindfulness.

The project hopes to make a real, measurable difference to young people’s emotional well being, help young people and school staff to become more aware of the early warning signs, alleviate pressure on services, and reduce the stigma associated with mental illnesses.

Ms Donna Jones, Special Educational Needs Coordinator, at the College, said: “At a time where the focus is very much on mental health, The Hummingbird Project focuses on strengthening such skills as resilience and perseverance. The project aims to support students to take steps to achieving their personal potential in a positive way. The students have really engaged well with the team.”
